New Helvetia Theatre pulls another little-known musical gem out of its bag of tricks with Little Fish by Michael John LaChiusa, and suggested by a series of short stories by Deborah Eisenberg. If LaChiusa’s name sounds the tiniest bit familiar, it’s because he also wrote See What I Wanna See, which was based on short stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. In Little Fish, we meet Charlotte (Maggie Hollinbeck), who is trying to quit smoking. She takes up swimming, but still struggles, until she learns that little fish must swim with the school or they won’t make it. The production, directed by New Helvetia founder Connor Mickiewicz with musical direction by Graham Sobelman, also features Rosemary Babich, Danielle Hanson, Craig Howard, Steve Minow, Andrew Perez, Tristan Rumery, and Nanci Zoppi.

Little Fish; 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; $25. New Helvetia Theatre at the Artisan Theatre, 1901 Del Paso Boulevard; (916) 469-9850; www.newhelvetia.org. Through October 29.
