Freakin’ at the adults-only show

I really don’t believe it’s that big.

Shel Silverstein was not necessarily just a “Where the Sidewalk Ends” kinda guy. Yes, he was good with the kids’ stuff—but he also wrote some nasty, nasty material; songs with titles like “Penicillin Penny,” “Get My Rocks Off” and “Freakin’ at the Freakers Ball.” So when Resurrection Theatre decided to pull out the Silverstein for adults, well—let’s just say this isn’t a show for the kindergarten set. “Bad” words are used, but oh, my goodness, they are used soooo well. And the comedic talents of the cast—Jes Gonzales, Jeffrey Lloyd Heatherly, Heather Marie Judkins, Jouni Kirjola, Alysha S. Krumm, Ben Miller, Laura White and Joelle Wirth—get a real workout. They’ve got the added fun of Benjamin T. Ismail’s direction (this is a guy who knows what to do with set changes: Fill ’em with physical comedy and on-screen animations) and a Silverstein-tribute set design (also by Ismail, with Christopher Cook). Adults only! But be prepared to giggle, guffaw, hoot and laugh very, very loudly.

An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein, 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday; $10-$15. Resurrection Theatre in the Wilkerson Theatre at the California Stage Complex, 1723 25th Street; (916) 838-0618; www.resurrectiontheatre.com. Through May 29.
