Davis may not have a lot of swanky restaurants, but the town’s bakeries rank among the best in the region. We particularly admire , which is charmingly housed in a homey bungalow across from Davis’ Central Park. Ciocolat is for those who prefer fresh to canned, butter to margarine and Callebaut to Hershey’s. Drop by in the morning to enjoy an array of breakfast pastries, such as scones filled with cranberries and white chocolate or pear puff pastries with almond cream. The rest of the day brings other meticulously prepared goodies. Many of the cakes and mousses are presented in individual, geometric portions worthy of a Wayne Thiebaud painting. The savory menu, which includes wild-mushroom lasagna, croque monsieur and quiche Lorraine, makes Ciocolat as good a dining choice as any in this town, with the added bonus that a wonderful dessert beckons at the end of the meal. 301 B Street in Davis, (530) 753-3088.
