Food Stuff

Corporate fast food imposes a number of environmental and social costs: depleted rain forests, automobile dependency and a paunchy citizenry. The bottom line, though, is that fast food is cheap. Who can compete with an extra-value meal? Rick’s Hacienda, that’s who. Rick’s offers a weekday lunch special for just $3.75. For your money, you get soup or salad, rice and beans and your choice of entree (a single taco, burrito, quesadilla, enchilada, etc.). Unlike the burger places, where you are unlikely to want to stay more than 15 minutes, Rick’s has friendly waiters, comfortable booths, low lighting and a well-stocked bar. The kids will enjoy watching the colorful tropical fish in the dining room’s large aquarium. Portions were generous and filling. Although the flavors were rather bland, it is hard to be critical when Rick’s Hacienda gives you so much for less than $4. 3330 Fruitridge Road, (916) 428-1344.
