Fall back, do something new

Without fail, daylight saving time ends every year, and without fail, it still manages to take everyone by surprise; cue every single conversation the week following: “Man, it gets dark so early now!” The silver lining, of course, is that we get an extra hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 6. You could, of course, sleep through it. But you could also get all carpe diem on this (arguably outmoded) government regulation by doing something you wouldn’t normally do with that extra hour we’re picking up; check out some fun options around the city this week:

Put it to use right away later that Sunday with Bikes & Beers Bike Show at Sactown Union Brewery (1210 66th Street, Unit B) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to show off their wheels in the show in exchange for a canned food donation. There will be food to snack on and brews to drink, and admission is free. Visit www.facebook.com/events/

On Tuesday, November 8, let the dancers of the Sacramento Ballet lead you through a kinetic journey through the Crocker Art Museum (216 O Street) for the Tour + Performance: Sacramento Ballet event at 11 a.m. and noon. Attendees will explore the connection between visual art and movement, followed by a performance from the dancers. Each tour lasts an hour and a half and tickets are $8; visit www.crockerartmuseum.org/event/

Later in the week at the Crocker on Thursday, November 10, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., ArtMix: Howl is going down. Take part in this adults-only night of socially conscious art-making following a tumultuous election season. Hosted by Activism Articulated’s Altars for Justice and Sol Collective, there will be deejays, an open-mic and drink specials all night. Visit www.crockerartmuseum.org for more info.

Also on Thursday: the Intro to Sourdough Bread Baking class at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op (2820 R Street) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There are few pleasures more pure than fresh-baked bread, and this class will teach you how to take a naturally fermented wild-yeast starter and turn it into gluten-y magic. Enrollment is $70-$80; visit http://www.brownpapertickets.com/
