The problem with a legacy, as Jimi or Trane might tell you (if they could) is that it’s out of your hands once those hands no longer live. And so it is with this late leader of the San Pedro trio the Minutemen, who was killed in a van crash in 1985. Boon was possibly the most inventive and versatile guitar player in indie rock, and his vast talent as a guitarist is evident in this collection of jams (with side bands and at a George Hurley-free Minutemen gig), pretty finger-picking, psych-outs and Steve Cropper-esque lick fests. Were there no other documentation, I’d suggest this album, but Boon’s stuff with his trio has better sound and better takes and is more readily available. This one’s only for fanatics.
