City of trees

Trees not only make our city more beautiful; they also absorb air pollution, produce oxygen and make leaves for our children to play in.

Someone once told me that Sacramento has more trees per capita than Paris, France. A quick call to Steve Schweigerdt at the Sacramento Tree Foundation confirmed that we passed up Paris in 1955. In an effort to keep our current tree population healthy and increase our number of trees, the Sacramento Tree Foundation is sponsoring free TreeKeeper classes. Basically, students will become the “ambassadors of tree knowledge,” learning how to care for the newest members of our tree population. They’ll learn pruning techniques, tree identification, troubleshooting and monitoring. The goal is to develop TreeKeepers who can help our young trees reach their full potential. The first class will be held at 9 a.m. this Saturday. Meet other tree-loving folks in Land Park, located on Freeport Boulevard across from Sacramento City College. Call (916) 924-8733, ext. 114, for more information.
