Sugar & Spice

Rated 2.0 Cheerleaders rally around a pregnant squad member and go on a mini-crime spree in this film, which starts fierce and funny, and then seemingly becomes scared of itself. There’s much to applaud here, including a hilarious romance between the high school quarterback, Jack (James Marsden), and the captain of the cheerleaders, Diane (Marley Shelton), but the film seems cut short, as if some studio head got wind of the funny, nasty film being made and ordered revamps (the movie contains overdubbing to clean up the language). I have no problems with a wholesome, squeaky-clean film, but this film needed to be as nasty as it wanted to be. It suffers from being less.
