U2 3D

Rated 4.0

The Irish band’s 2005–06 “Vertigo” tour of Latin America is featured in this IMAX 3D concert documentary directed by Mark Pellington and Catherine Owens (who also designs the band’s live shows). The two keep the movie short—80 minutes—and don’t pad it with offstage footage. What we get is pure U2, their charisma magnified by the mammoth screen, viewed from all the best seats in the house (including right on stage next to Bono and the Edge, their arms and guitar necks sawing the air right over our heads). The movie lets the band and its music speak for themselves for the first half, then becomes trippier and more adventurous as it goes along, moving us from the audience to the stage to the midst of the JumboTron lights and back again. It’s a heady, dizzying experience, and U2’s fans will love it.
