Super Troopers

Rated 2.0 A field office of the Vermont Highway Patrol fights a turf war with local police. The comedy troupe Broken Lizard (Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stohlhanske) wrote the script, Chandrasekhar directed, and they clearly aspire to be the next Monty Python. But you know how it is: some people can tell a joke and some people can’t. These guys seem great to knock back a beer with but they’re simply not funny performers—except once in a while, by accident. (As film craftsmen, they’re about two notches above Tom Green.) Adding some professional heft are Brian Cox as the chief trooper and Marisa Coughlan as a sympathetic cop. Coughlan has star potential, but her choice of vehicles so far (Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Gossip, Freddy Got Fingered, now this) hasn’t been the best.
