Sideways

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Happy April Fools’ Day!

It’s one of our favorite holidays around here. The Weekly World Reno News & Review, our tabloid spoof issue, is one of my favorite annual issues. We got hate mail for weeks following our April Fools’ Day issues the last couple of years. Two years ago featured perennial local right-wing candidate Sharron Angle depicted as a demon, and then last year, our cover model was a cave troll sporting a “MAGA” hat. On both occasions, people were pissed.

It’s a fun opportunity for us to vent some steam writing Onion-style satire pieces, or just ridiculous over-the-top stuff. It’s also a great opportunity for us to pull some actual honest-to-goodness pranks, which is why—at the risk of ruining the joke by explaining it—we decided to print the cover sidewise this week. If just one person picks up the paper the wrong way, and tries to open it, only to have all the pages spill out, it’ll be worth it. If this happens to you or a member of your family, please send us a pic.

Also, just to be clear: the newspaper isn’t now made of “100% recycled marijuana.” I’m not even sure what that means (and I wrote it). It’s a joke. However, I do think this is a great marketing bit. People regularly use our paper to wrap fish, line birdcages, practice drawing goatees and eye patches, wrap presents, and so forth. Why not roll it up and smoke it? Actually, come to think of it, I’m sure somebody somewhere in our fine burg has rolled us into a joint before, but, I’ve never seen it happen. Once again, if just one person sees this week’s cover, and thinks it’s for real, and tries to light it up—totally worth it.

Send us pics.
