We’re all made of stars

The Fleischmann Planetarium appeared doomed earlier this year when the University of Nevada, Reno, planned to build a parking lot on the site it has occupied for 40 years. A public outcry ensued, and the landmark building was reprieved. This weekend, Friends of the Planetarium will present a space-themed event to thank the community for its support of the “Space Place” and to raise funds for the planetarium. The event, “Starry, Starry Night,” features a performance by AREA-51 Dance Theatre (pictured) and live music by the Reno Big Band. Space-themed art by Peter Goin, Sharon Maczko, Erik Holland and other local artists will be auctioned off to raise funds. Guest speaker Dr. Wendy Calvin, a research associate professor of geophysics at UNR, will discuss her work as a member of the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover Mission science team. In addition to entertainment, there will be a no-host bar and free food and snacks. The free event begins 7 p.m. June 10 at Esoteric Coffeehouse & Gallery, 135 N. Sierra St. Call the planetarium at 784-4813 or Esoteric at 322-8999 for details.
