Spoon

Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Somewhere between a battle cry and a Lexus commercial is the Austin rock act’s sixth disc. Spoon returns with all the familiar, angular guitar work and algebras of rhythm that have earned them cultish dedication from their fans. Ga is cluttered but sterile, white soul music that always seems to come up one beat per measure short of being fully danceable. Lead singer and guitarist Britt Daniel leads the band through 10 tracks full of mixing-room trickery, both skeletal and ghostly. That said, this is Spoon at its most confident and least fragile in its decade-plus career. “Finer Feelings” and “Eddie’s Ragga” testify to a slow and steady loosening of the belt—a relaxing breath out—by one of The Live Music Capital’s finest.
