After tourism state Senator Harry Reid spoke at the new Capitol Vistors Center in the nation’s capitol, he was quoted in the D.C. Examiner about how the new air conditioned center will provide relief from smelly tourists, a comment that leaped onto hundreds of internet sites.

“In the summer because of the heat and high humidity, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the capitol,” Reid said. “It may be descriptive but it’s true.”

Reid said his staff had warned him against the comment, but he decided to say it anyway. Soon it was picked up by both news and political sites, with anti-Democratic sites like Fox News especially numerous.
