The new year in Reno has gotten off to a hotter start than usual, and the warm temperatures are melting the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

With an average temperature of 40.4 degrees, January was the third-warmest on record for Reno. The only warmer Januaries were in 2003, 43 degrees, and 2018, 42.4 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Compounding the problem is that January was also dry this year—with just .13 inches of rain.
