Depot underway

Construction of a new Sparks bus depot for Citifare (RTC Ride), the municipal bus line, has been underway since February and has reached the point of a framework of steel girders showing the size and shape of the facility. Bordered by 14th Street, Victorian Avenue, 15th Street and Interstate 80, the facility will house 15 bus bays and cost more than $20 million, about a quarter over the original estimate. It will be called Centennial Plaza (which, as it happens, was the name of a proposed 1983 Reno hotel that became a symbol of unplanned growth). The depot site was placed adjacent to a now-troubled downtown apartment development.
