Back to Africa

Bantu Spirit has become the place to go in Reno if you are curious about African art, clothing and culture, particularly Zimbabwean art. The owners, Sandra Adams and Sidney Sukuta, opened the shop less than a year ago and have been striving to make the wonders of African culture more accessible to the community. Aside from their unique assortment of art, Bantu Spirit has been offering weekly African drum lessons. At 4 p.m. Jan. 18, they’ll host a cultural event titled “Africa Through American Eyes.” This show will introduce Reno audiences to relatively unknown regional poets—poets whose primal poetry has not been filtered by Western sensibilities. There will also be songs, performed by Jacki Ford, drumming performances by Rob Wisniewski and an original interpretive dance by Martina Young. The event takes place during the River Walk Merchant Association’s Wine Walk at Bantu Spirit and Sierra Arts, 17 N. Virginia St. Call 328-3584.
