Hi everybody,

I won't bother to make this newsletter introduction exactly 95 words,

because I think Brian already did that once this year, but guess

what? It's time to announce the winners of everybody's favorite

Northern Nevada micro-fiction contest. The entries seemed especially

bleak this year. Suicide was a recurring theme, which got to be a

little disturbing for us editors who had to read dozens of these

stories, about half of which ended with a character dying. Some of

these morbid tales were pretty good and made it into the finalists,

but considering all that death and gloom, maybe it's not surprising

that our favorite, the one we all gravitated toward, was one of the

few stories that actually made us laugh. Pro tip for next year: 95

words is about the perfect length for a good joke.

Also, in this week's issue is one of our Family Guides, this one

geared toward everybody's third favorite holiday: Thanksgiving. There

are articles about being nice to your family and how not to feel sad

in college and how to hold your fork and practical advice like "no

phones at the table." Over in the arts section, we had a little

sub-theme: building musical instruments. The Arts & Culture feature

is about a local musician who now builds guitars, and Musicbeat is

about an upcoming workshop for learning the basics on how to build

synthesizers. Also, in news, Dennis Myers explores Interstate 11, the

proposed new freeway that might be cutting through the state.

As always, be sure to pick up the newsprint edition of the paper for

exclusive columns, cartoons and fire kindling.
