Mount Shasta Guide to Fun

Robin Kohn

This is a terrific little guide not only to the trails and hiking destinations, such as myriad waterfalls, immediately around Mount Shasta, but also to those in the much larger Mount Shasta region. That vast area reaches from Scotts Valley (Etna and Fort Jones) in the west to Tulelake and Lava Beds National Monument in far northeast California and from Dunsmuir in the south to Yreka in the north. Robin Kohn, a 1990 Chico State University grad in recreation administration, is a tour and backcountry guide who lives in Mt. Shasta City. The book is well-organized and -written, the maps immediately clear, and the options eclectic. This is a guide to fun, after all. In addition to hiking, skiing and snowboarding, she includes bicycling, rock climbing, tennis, golf and water sports among the area’s attractions. There are also several driving tours (around Mount Shasta, for example), and Kohn offers short walking and driving guides to the towns in the area, with brief histories and points of interest. The Mount Shasta region is one of the most spectacular in the Western United States and conveniently close to the Chico area, and this book is a perfect introduction to it.
