Five new Chico acts to keep an ear out for

PERVERT

PERVERT is the freshest band in Chico. The sound is a wild, crowd-pleasing, mash-up of punk, rap, metal and experimental noise made by a bunch of energetic youngsters committed to putting on exciting live shows.

Next show: Clock Strikes 13 Tour (with Z-Man, DJ True Justice and more), tonight, April 19, 7 p.m., Naked Lounge.

Mr. Malibu

Mr. Malibu is a new supergroup made up of four of Chico’s most tuneful tunesmiths—Lisa Marie (Bunnymilk, Skin Peaks), Kerra Jessen (The She Things, Skin Peaks), Don Parrish (Bran Crown, Bad Mana) and Jake Sprecher (Yule Logs)— joining voices for some fun and catchy garage rock.

Lo & Behold

Yes! Some young blood is finally pumping through Chico’s funk/jam scene. Lo & Behold‘s super-tight grooves, creative arrangements, refreshingly catchy vocal melodies and energy keep the show going until closing time.

Next show: Friday, May 4, 7:30 p.m., with MAWD and Meurals, at Naked Lounge.

Susurrus

There’s no point in trying to describe Susurrus better than the band: “mom rock with folk-punk assets … ageless, literate, resentful.” As far as lyricists go, former Royal Crown and Pan Pan frontwoman Becky Brown is about as good as Chico’s ever had, and the fourpiece—rounded out by keyboardist Mary Rose Lovgren (Antfarm), bassist Anna Adams (Pan Pan) and drummer Shoko Horikawa (XDS)—has deep roots in the Chico scene.

Next show: Too Hot, Too Cold benefit for MONCA (multiple acts), Saturday, April 21, 6 p.m., MONCA.

SPUN

New band alert! For an act that’s been at it for only four months, SPUN is already killing it. The young trio features members of Sunny Acres and No Wave, and they are busy recording their debut, for which a single—a dynamic slice of super-tight post-punk called “Family Tradition”—is already streaming online (hear it at spunchico.bandcamp.com/releases).

Next show: Tuesday, May 1, 8 p.m., opening for Joyce Manor, Senator Theatre.
