Wheels turn on eco-friendly invention

Students win manufacturing award for bike chain guide and bash guard

Chico State students are really stepping up to the plate when it comes to efforts in sustainability. Take, for example, the fact that just this month, the university’s Sustainable Manufacturing Program was awarded the top prize for their mountain bike chain guide and bash guard.

A team of 12 students entered their invention, which included the design and fabrication of the chain guide and bash guard as well as the plan and tools for mass production, according to a university press release. What makes their product so eco-friendly is the packaging is both made with recycled materials—plastic and cardboard—and includes a fully compostable plastic package.

This is the 11th time since 1987 that Chico State has taken top honors at the Manufacturing Challenge, sponsored by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
