The price of education
Buying all the new supplies and outfits for a new school year is a fun time for students. But it puts a pretty big hole in their parents’ pocketbooks, based on numbers from the National Retail Federation. In 2007, total back-to-school sales were expected to reach $18.4 billion. Here’s how that breaks down, on average, per student:
Categories | Amount spent | Percent change since last year |
---|---|---|
Clothing/ accessories | $231.80 | 0% |
Electronics | $129.94 | +13% |
Shoes | $108.42 | +10% |
School supplies | $94.02 | +9% |
Total | $563.49 | +7% |
