Radio waves

The College Music Journal has nominated Chico State’s KCSC for a College Radio award for Best Student-Run Internet Only Station. KCSC jumped on the Internet superhighway in 1999, but it’s no spring chicken. The station debuted in 1951 on the AM dial. It can now be found exclusively online. Check www.kcscradio.com for more info. The awards will be given Oct. 18 at the CMJ Marathon in New York.

Making the team

USA Rugby recently announced the Women’s Collegiate All-Americans for this year, out of nearly 10,000 women playing on 300 teams nation-wide. And Chico State has a couple mentions. Kelly Nielson was chosen for the first team, and Tara McBride, Rachel Reddick and Caroline White took second-team honors. Way to go!

Still working on it

Since Hurricane Katrina socked New Orleans in 2005, Chico State students have been crossing the country, using a week of their winter or spring breaks to lend a helping hand to families whose homes were damaged. The Rebuild New Orleans Project was spawned by a Chico State construction management major in 2006 with just 22 volunteers. The project has since mushroomed and is expected to send 100 people this January. Volunteers will toil away putting up drywall, painting and laying down new floors for the many people still living in FEMA trailers next to their destroyed homes. Currently the project is raising funds to help pay the way to New Orleans. You can check out the group at www.rebuildneworleansproject.org.

Get your vote on

Associated Students is holding a special election Thursday (Oct. 4) to fill the position of commissioner of community affairs. Whoever is elected will be in charge of bridging the gap between the Chico community and the school. It seems the position was unpopular in fall, when the regular election took place, and no one applied. Hence the springtime voting. Log onto www.aschico.com to cast your vote and read the candidates’ statements. Running for the position are: Rob Feliciano, Jeremiah D. Sanders, Kelly Perez, Osagie Edebiri (Osazee’s brother) and Capt. Jack Johnston.
