R.I.P.D.

Rated 2.0

While blatantly a knock-off of Men in Black, the latest paranormal buddy movie is a surprisingly fun popcorner in its own right. The basic premise: A murdered cop (Ryan Reynolds) wakes up on the other side and finds himself drafted into the afterlife version of the Justice Department. He’s teamed with a long-dead loose cannon of a lawman (Jeff Bridges, chewing the scenery), and the two try to track down the rookie’s killer while keeping the fabric of the cosmos from being RIP’D apart. Before it settles into formula in the second half, there’s some potential, but it’s not anything memorable. Even so, it moves fast and is consistently entertaining. As a matinees go, you could do worse. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13.
