Obamacare signups booming

Millions enroll in coverage during ACA’s second open enrollment period

President Obama recently announced that 11.4 million Americans signed up for health care coverage during the Affordable Care Act’s second open enrollment period, which closed Feb. 15.

That total is likely to grow as some people finish coverage applications started during a special enrollment period for those who attempted to sign up through HealthCare.gov but failed due to a glitch in the website, according to California Healthline. The extension also applies to those who had excessive wait times when they attempted to sign up through federal call centers.

Obama’s administration estimated about 9.1 million of those who signed up will complete the enrollment process and keep coverage by paying their premiums through 2015.

In a video released by the White House, Obama said the strong enrollment numbers “give you some sense of how hungry people were out there for affordable, accessible health insurance.”
