THE LONG GOODBYE The Aug. 2 funeral procession for murdered Butte County Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Hunter and Lt. Larry Estes was almost seven miles long. Upwards of 5,000 law enforcement officers from as far away as Medford, Ore., attended. Neighborhood Church, where a joint memorial service was held, was standing room only, and almost 1,000 officers who couldn’t fit into the church stood in a formation outside in the sun for two hours during the services. Hundreds of people lined the procession route to view the hour-long parade of cars, trucks and motorcycles.
