New charter springs up

Add Wildflower Open Classroom to the growing list of local charter schools

Wildflower Open Classroom—a K-8 public charter school set to open in the fall—is accepting admission applications for the 2011-12 school year. The school’s charter was approved by the Chico Unified School District in October 2010.

“Our program philosophy is based on the open-classroom model,” said Jonas Herzog, chairman of Wildflower’s board of directors. Some of the school’s basic tenets, said Herzog, include having multi-age classrooms, small class sizes and integrated thematic learning. Personal and social responsibility will also be a focus, as well as fostering environmental stewardship and an appreciation of the arts.

Wildflower Open Classroom is seeking a facility “with a goal of finding a location within a 15-minute bike ride from downtown Chico,” Herzog said.
