Makato Ozone Trio

Reborn

Makoto Ozone’s Reborn is a piano lover’s fix. This wonderful Japanese jazz pianist, along with James Genus on upright bass and Clarence Penn on drums, delivers the goods song after song on this album of mostly standards, such as “Pennies from Heaven” and “Everything Happens to Me.” The lesser-known “Miyako,” by saxophonist Wayne Shorter, gets a beautiful treatment from the trio as well, and Genus’ bass work on this one is gorgeous. Film soundtrack composer Shunsuke Kikuchi’s “Doraemon No Uta,” about the cute little blue Japanese cartoon character with the propeller on his head, is bouncy and playful. Satoru Shionoya’s 7-minute-and-42-second ballad “Pray” is exquisite. Almost can’t get enough of the beautiful sounds coming from Ozone and Genus.Gary Burton/Makoto Ozone Duo at Monterey Jazz Festival, Sunday, Sept. 21 (www.montereyjazzfestival.org).
