They Were Wrong, So We Drowned

Welcome to Brooklyn’s Liars’ smart-aleck slap of a sophomore effort, a response to its debut They Threw Us in a Trench—a dance positive blast punk platter whose twisted teat critics suckled blood-raw for three long years. They Were Wrong signals a Liars line-up change that saw the exit of the superior rhythm section that was an integral reason for the acclaim the band had garnered. Remaining members, vocalist Angus Andrews and guitarist Aaron Hemphill, took the opportunity to build more from expression and less from technical virtuosity. The result is a noisy, antagonistic exploration of witchcraft by way of tribal drumming, bloodied chants and bruised specters of errant guitar noise. Good to scare the neighbors, not much fun to listen to.
