Chico mourns the passing of two eco-friendly community leaders

The Chico community is mourning the passing of two prominent friends of the environment.

Harlan Dean Lundberg, who passed away in his Richvale home on Aug. 16, was the third of four brothers who established Lundberg Family Farms as the largest producer of organic rice and rice products in the United States. Lundberg was 77. A memorial service at the Evangelical Free Church in Oroville will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 27).

Retired civil engineer and avid pilot Dan Cook (pictured) helped orchestrate the construction of the Manzanita Avenue roundabouts, preventing the roadway from becoming a full-blown four-lane highway and saving approximately 100 trees in front of Hooker Oak Recreation Area in the process.

Cook, 76, died on Aug. 12. At his request, no formal service will be held, though donations to the Oroville chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association are encouraged in lieu of flowers (see www.brusiefh.com for more information).
