Dissection project: The more things change

Local schools and rules are in a state of flux

Welcome back to school, kids.

You’re going to see changes this year from the lunches you are served to the fees your parents pay to even, perhaps, where your school is located. Things are shifting here in Chico.

The Chico Unified School District has a new nutrition services director and early indications are your cafeteria lunch is much improved over years past. That’s a good thing.

On the other hand, the state Constitution guarantees, “a pupil enrolled in a school shall not be required to pay any fee, deposit or other charge not specifically authorized by law.” And that might work if the state funded schools at a decent level. But it doesn’t, so you (or your parents) pay. Here’s a guide to the confusing state rules.

We also try to explain all of the school site shuffling that’s gone on while you were enjoying summer vacation.

Share this issue with your parents—they’re going to need it.

And have a great school year.
