Day off for the Earth

Workers at a British nonprofit will get to spend Feb. 29 at home, reducing their carbon footprints, during a “Great Green Leap Day.”

The National Trust, which is dedicated to protecting heritage sites, told its employees to take the day to implement environmentally friendly measures in their lives. Reuters reported the organization was urging its employees and volunteers—4,800 and 5,000 people, respectively—to do a variety of things at their homes, such as installing energy-saving compact fluorescent lights and composting.

Fiona Richards, National Trust’s director, told Reuters the nonprofit’s hope was that businesses throughout Great Britain would consider doing the same thing.
