City Council continues recycling company appeal

A half-hour into Tuesday’s (Aug. 5) Chico City Council meeting, the panel voted to continue the first item up for public discussion—an appeal by Basik Recycling of the Planning Commission’s denial of the business’ request to operate a “Recycling-Scrap and Dismantling Yard.”

The Park Avenue business is located in an area zoned for light manufacturing/ industrial next to a residential neighborhood, and many of the neighbors don’t like the operation.

About 30 attended the meeting, 15 of whom wanted to speak. But Mayor Scott Gruendl pointed out that the company had already asked that its appeal be moved to a later council meeting. Those who had gathered to speak, Gruendl pointed out, would get only one chance to do so. Speaking at this meeting, then, would greatly delude their arguments and allow the company reps two weeks to prepare responses. So nobody spoke on the matter, which was moved to the Aug. 19 meeting.
