Local broadcast earns award as best newscast

A local TV news broadcast earned top honors at an annual awards ceremony of the Radio Television News Directors Association.

NBC 24 Action News at 5 was awarded “Best 60 Minute Newscast” in the small-market division at the 28th annual NorCal RTNDA Journalism Awards. RTNDA selected a single news day, and each station was required to enter shows that were broadcast that day.

The broadcast competed with stations in larger regions, including Fresno, Bakersfield and Salinas-Monterey. Station News Director Trisha Coder said the win was quite an honor, especially considering the caliber of the competitors: “We were up against stations in much larger markets with more resources at their disposal,” she writes in an e-mail.

Coder, along with Executive Producer Geoff Thomas and Director Kevin Flannigan (pictured, left to right), accepted the award for the station.
