Arts DEVO

Another busy Chico week on the eve of Bike Month

Greg Degouveia’s bike clock

Bike is the subject May is Bike Month, so here are two arty bike items:

Bike = Art: RAYRAY Gallery is gonna do its thing and have artists go bike crazy with paintings, sculptures and more for the month. Opening-night reception is Friday, April 29, 6-9 p.m.

• Bikes = Art: Greg Degouveia is no stranger to complex sculptures involving bike parts (see his site for proof: www.conceptulight.com), and for Bike Month he’s working on this giant bike-clock sculpture. He says progress is slow at this point, but he’ll have something up at the Wildflower Century race this weekend.

Chico = Art I know I do this a lot in this space, but I never get tired of proving that Chico has more art than it knows what to do with. On our calendar and nightlife pages we try to highlight the highlights, but for many weeks of the year we don’t have enough room. Here’s a sampling of what we did not highlight this week:

Thursday, April 28, 7 p.m, Troy Jollimore’s At Lake Scugog: Poems. Lyon Books celebrates the release of the Chico State professor’s latest poetry collection at the Blue Room Theatre.

Thursday-Saturday, April 28-30, 7 p.m. (plus 3 p.m. matinee on Sat.), Honk! A Musical. Brand-new youth theater group, Chico Troupers, performs the story of the Ugly Duckling. Visit www.thechicotroupers.com for info.

Siobhan’s temptations

Friday, April 29, 7:30 p.m., Orpheus in the Underworld: The Return Policy. Jerry Miller and Butte College’s Theater Department dredge up the divine music for one fund-raising performance at in the Arts 100 Theater.

Friday & Saturday, April 29 & 30, Ishi Gathering: Two days of celebrating Ishi’s story with demos, films and panels at various Oroville locations—Ehmann Home, Butte County Historical Society Museum, Lake Oroville Visitor Center.

Saturday, April 30, 5-7 p.m., 1078 Gallery Members Show. Reception for the 30th edition of the annual group show, featuring music by Rob Davidson, Sharon DeMeyer, Robert Karch and Elizabeth Newman Kuiper.

“The Garden of Earthly Delights,” detail

Saturday, April 30, 7:30 & 10:30 p.m., The Garden of Earthly Delights. I heart Hieronymus Bosch (I have an action figure of his ice-skating funnel-hat bird with twisted beak from “The Temptation of Saint Anthony” painting on my desk for crying out loud … so, I’m a real dork), which means I’m especially intrigued by designer Siobhan Barrett’s Bosch-inspired fashion show coming to the Blue Room Theatre. There are two showings, and the late show is 18-plus. I’m not sure whether the Bosch influence will mean anyone is going get impaled by musical instruments or have plants growing from their no-no holes, but the possibility should be enough to make you go find out.

Saturday, April 30, 8 p.m., Wild Oak Records’ Songwriters’ Collective CD-release. Chico State music label’s release of its Chico Unplugged disc at Café Coda, with performances by Zach Zeller, Adam Mehr, Letters, Aamir Malik and Sydney Collett & Mark Pagel.

Dangerous Ponies

Monday, May 2, 7 p.m., Seven-Eighths Under Water. Chico High literary mag release at Lyon Books.

Tuesday, May 3, 8 p.m., Dangerous Ponies. The Philly queer/allied seven-piece brings the indie/dance-music party to the 1078 Gallery.
