The butterfly men

Did you know that climate change can be shown through butterflies? Well, it's true--and two experts on the insects have been noting their migratory patterns for decades. Our main feature story focuses on Arthur Shapiro, a UC Davis prof who follows his winged friends around the Sacramento Valley and keeps meticulous records on what he finds. Then there's Sterling Mattoon, a Chico butterfly expert who even has one of the insects named after him(!) His story is highlighted in a sidebar to the main feature. Check 'em both out--these guys are fascinating.

In other news: Are girls getting the short end of the stick at Chico Unified School District? An investigation aims to find out. Also, religious groups get together for philanthropy; music lovers join forces for Paradise music education; the founder of slam poetry makes his way to Chico; and Anthony Peyton Porter contemplates parenthood.

As always, thanks for reading,
